Power of Private Practice

It was not long ago that that in any town there was only one person who was known as the best tailor.......the best biryani chef......the best mechanic........

There was often one healer in those towns.........those days he was called a healer.....some have their own local town doctor......

It was noble time

A simpler time

Ofcourse it was tough take on the responsibility of an entire community health on your shoulders

My father used to be that kind of town doctor

Tough times, tough decisions.......but Im sure he used to enjoy it in his own way

In big cities there are still a few independant doctors with their own private chambers....

Usually nothing fancy......simple examination bed, desk, some tools, few meds etc and a contract to refer patients for investigation or medications so on.....

But times have changed......cities have changed......peoples expectations have changed.......

The independant healthcare contractor......these private specialists were seen as inefficient.....close your practice and come join the big shiny buildings.......

Why work so hard they say...

Nice big clinics

Air conditioning

Wifi

Free coffee

Work fixed hours and get guaranteed salary

Be cool

Be happy

Sometimes its not always that fancy

Not all things come true

There is an increasing number of depressed and dissatisfied professionals

You have seen them

Robotic speech

Robotic movements

Memorised dialogue

No time for manners

Come in, pay, consult, pay, take medicine, pay, get lost.......

How do they work?

Very nicely, clean coats, nice desk, airconditioned structures......

Something is missing....

Not for everyone.......some actually enjoy the calmness and the regular routines.....no big deal.....it pays the rent......

So what about the private practice docs?

Is it a dying art?

Is it really inefficient?

Maybe its good to be seen by a doc who has a chit chat with you before the consult.......have you wondered that this communication is also part of the therapy?

Well that can only happen when patients are put before profits.....

That is the beauty of private practice

To be a true independant healthcare professional......a free lancer medical specialist.......a physician entrepreneur in a way

Its tough......I know

Its hard....I know

Maybe you dont see that many patients......I know

But you are the boss

You work when you want......how you want....

Will 1000 patients at the end of the month value and respect you?

Or you need a few hundred per month?

Autonomy doesnt guarantee a mercedes.......

But it might give you the peace of mind and life purpose that a regular salary won't

True you have bills to pay

True you have massive EMI backpayments

But is your career all about staying one inch above unemployment?

For young physicians just graduated......either MBBS or have competed a postgraduate course....

You need to choose

And choose wisely

Im not here to guarantee anything

Nor can I promise any form of comfort

All I can say is.....

As a physician entrepreneur myself....

I got your back.....

I'm not sure how exactly or when....

But you all need some challenge in your life.....you cannot grow in comfort or quietness

Career goals should be independant goals
